AI answer engines are the new search. Learn what Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are, and the practical steps Indian businesses can take to get mentioned in AI answers.
More and more people now ask questions to AI — Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or voice assistants — instead of scrolling through ten blue links. These tools give one direct answer and usually mention only a few brands. If your business is not part of that answer, you are invisible to a growing share of customers.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means structuring your content so that search engines and assistants can lift a clear, direct answer from your page — for featured snippets, “People also ask”, voice search and AI Overviews.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) means improving the chances that large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention and recommend your brand when they generate answers.
How is this different from normal SEO?
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages | Be the quoted answer | Be the recommended brand |
| Where | Google results | Snippets, AI Overviews, voice | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity |
| Key signals | Keywords, links, speed | Clear Q&A, schema | Entity clarity, citations, reviews |
The good news: they build on each other. Strong SEO is still the foundation.
8 practical steps to get found in AI answers
1. Answer the question in the first 2–3 sentences
Start important pages with a short, factual summary — who you are, what you do, where, and for whom. AI tools prefer quotable, self-contained answers.
2. Add real FAQ sections
Use the exact questions customers ask (“How much does SEO cost in India?”, “Which is the best digital marketing agency in Gorakhpur?”) and answer each in 40–80 words.
3. Use structured data (schema)
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Article schema help machines understand your business as an entity — name, location, services, prices and reviews.
4. Keep your business details identical everywhere
Name, address, phone, services and founding details should match on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Consistency builds entity confidence.
5. Publish specific, experience-based content
Generic articles are ignored. Include real numbers in ₹, local examples, step-by-step processes and original insights from your work.
6. Earn mentions and reviews on trusted sites
AI models learn from the wider web. Reviews on Google, mentions in local news, industry directories and partner listings increase the chance you are recommended.
7. Allow AI crawlers and add llms.txt
Make sure your robots.txt does not block AI crawlers you want to reach, and publish an /llms.txt file — a plain-language summary of your business and key pages. (Our own site does this: see clicknaksha.com/llms.txt.)
8. Keep content fresh
Update prices, dates, statistics and FAQs regularly. AI answers favour current, maintained sources.
How to check if AI mentions you
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity questions your customers would ask, including your city.
- Search your main keywords on Google and see whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it cites.
- Track traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com in Google Analytics 4.
